Three-Toed Box Turtle
A sub-species of the common box turtles, this species is native to the southern-central part of the United States. They have also proven themselves to be popular pets among many different pet owners across the world.
Physiology
The turtle gets its name from the toes on its feet, but they can also be born with four toes, but this is rare. Three-toed box turtles have a dome shell that is about five inches in length, with the largest ever recorded measuring seven inches. Typically, the color of the shell is olive green or tan, with occasional yellow, red, or orange dots. These types of turtles do not live as long as larger varieties, but pet owners should still take into consideration that the three-toed box turtle may live as long as 20 years.
Habitat
Typically, the three-toed box turtle can be found from Texas to Florida, and as far north as Missouri. Since the turtle is very popular as a pet, they can also be found well outside of their home range. However, this is one of the few, if only, types of turtles that can live in an indoor enclosure and enjoy it.
Diet
Three-toed box turtles are omnivores, and will eat earthworms, insects, slugs, strawberries, mushrooms and other types of green vegetation. However, while they will eat meat, three-toed box turtles prefer to eat vegetation when they can. If someone has one as a pet, they should not watch them eat as they will become shy and stare back motionless at the person.
Behavior
The three-toed box turtle will migrate by the season to find the humidity levels that they prefer. In the spring, they can be observed in Arkansas in open grasslands, while in the fall they will go to forested areas.
