Loggerhead Sea Turtles

Loggerhead turtle are a well-known type of sea turtle who has a large range that extends throughout several parts of the world. Currently, it is listed as endangered, meaning it is illegal to hunt or kill the turtle throughout the world.

Physiology

Currently, the Loggerhead sea turtle feeds on fish, jellyfish and mollusks, as well as small marine animals that they can crush with their jaws. Overall, the species will spend the bulk of its life in the ocean, with the exception of the females who will lay their beach on the same beach that they themselves were hatched.

Typically, the female loggerhead sea turtle will lay 100 eggs the size of ping-pong balls, every two to three years. In the United States, it is the most common type of sea turtle to nest there, with large concentrations in Southern Florida. The gestation of the babies will take 60 days and they will emerge at night when it is easy to get away from predators.

Once they have reached the oceans, the baby loggerhead turtle will use the ocean currents to get to the Sargasso Sea, where they will remain until they mature. Sometimes, instead of migrating, the loggerhead sea turtle will go into a hibernation that will see them submerge for seven hours at a time, emerging for only seven minutes. These are the longest recorded dives of any air-breathing marine vertebrate.

Typically, loggerhead turtle will live for 30 to 50 years.

Conservation

The loggerhead sea turtle is currently under threat from shrimp trawls and fishing nets. As well, adult loggerhead turtle are often injured as a result of propellers or by swallowing fish hooks. As well, nesting sites are found by nesting season workers, who move the nest if it is in danger, including whether or not it is in danger or has been disturbed.

Conclusion

The loggerhead sea turtle is one of the larger types of sea turtles in existence. While not approaching the size of the leatherback, the loggerhead sea turtle is one that can be found across the planet, in a wide variety of locations. As well, the loggerhead sea turtle is one of the most threatened and great steps have to be taken to ensure that the species does not die out as a result of careless human fishing and the pollution that goes into the waters of the world. However, a great deal of effort by individuals may mean a better future for the loggerhead sea turtle.
