Typically, pet stores will get their turtles from breeders, but some also get them from individuals who pick them up from the wild and sell them to pet stores. When you buy them from a pet store, you are taking a risk that you may be getting a turtle who is not healthy because of the inhumane conditions that the turtle must suffer through in transport. As well, despite having turtles for sale, pet store owners have little knowledge about how the animals actually live, what they need and more.
If you are buying from a pet store, make sure you do your research and know exactly what you are getting before you buy it. Many pet store owners have turtles for sale that may look small when you buy them, but they can grow to 150 pounds in some cases.
The Internet
Another popular avenue for pet owners to find turtles for sale is through the internet. Many websites of breeders will offer the pets to you, much like a pet store. Where the internet differs is that when you buy the turtles, you are usually buying them from people who have experience in how they live and what they need. As a result, they may have an easier time in transit.
That being said, you could also be buying them from a website that doesn’t actually sell turtles, or you could end up getting a dead turtle when it finally arrives, resulting in you losing out on your money, and a turtle dying for no reason.

Turtles are amazing animals and as a result many establishments and websites will have turtles for sale. However, they are a wild animal and they deserve to be in their natural habitat, not living in a living room with people who do not know how to care for it. If you are looking for a pet, get a dog, if you are looking for an exotic pet then get a parrot or ferret, but forget about turtles for sale, they deserve better.
